To begin, download the [Arduino IDE] and follow the How-To Install chipKIT Core tutorial. Alternatively, you may wish to install the UECIDE IDE. Lastly, if you need advanced debugging abilities than you may import code written in the Arduino IDE, for chipKIT hardware, into MPLAB® X.

The standard, latest version of the Arduino IDE with the chipKIT compiler and library files
A Plugin for MPLAB® X which provides a wizard for importing chipKIT-core based Arduino sketches. Allows for building and advanced debugging from within the MPLAB® X IDE.
A heavily modified version of MPIDE with an enormous number of extra features

Note: that you may find mentions of a third option called MPIDE on various websites. MPIDE is an older fork of the Arduino IDE which is no longer updated or maintained.
