Sorry if this has been asked before, didn't notice it if so.

Will there be a generic way to program a PIC from linux? I sounds like it's headed to where I could use my normal IDE (emacs) and program a chip with avrdude, assuming I have the right hardware programmer. Is that right?

I've been thinking about trying a PIC for some time (I normally use Atmel stuff), but I just don't run Windows enough to gain any momentum with it.

Depends on what you're looking for. I think Mplab X could work from Linux, I had it running from Mac OS X.
