Hi, I don't have much knowledge in ethernet. I want to test ethernet shield that use Wiznet W5100. I want to know

 1. What ethernet cable I need to use to connect directly to laptop, straight cable or cross cable?
 2. Is that ethernet library in MPIDE can support the chip? How about the chip ENC28J60?

Thanks, I will tell the finding after I test it and maybe ask the further question.

You would need a crossover cable unless your laptop has a nice ethernet card that can handle auto-polarity detection (unlikely).

For the ENC28J60 chip there is my (quite memory hungry) network library: http://sourceforge.net/projects/chipkitnetwork/

I am not sure what is available for the Wiznet chips.

Can you connect el W5100 to the chipkit directly? do you have some care with the 3,3 vs 5V ? thanks
