I had a project using nearly all I/O of chipkit max. The problems I experienced I would like to share, that others have not to face the same trouble.

  1. Pin 26 and pin 27 do not work as output. But you can use them as input

  2. Pin 40, pin 41 and pin 42 are shared with anlaog input (200 Ohm in between)(40=>AN11,41=>AN13,42=>AN12). You cannot use them at the same time.

  3. Pin 29 and pin 43 are shared with pin 51 and pin 50. Where pin 29 and pin 43 go direct to the pic but pin 50 and pin 51 through jumper allowing to configure the direction.

  4. DSPI1 has following pins: Pin 11 SDI1 Pin 3 SDO Pin 38 SCK1 Pin 74 SS1

There is nothing special with DSPI1 beside that I found a post in a forum saying pin 20 for SDI1 instead pin 11. (Maybe I should comment on this post).

I hope these collection of special pins does help somebody to avoid the trouble I had. Correcting my nice professional produced PCB with wires and cut traces was not fun.

But please verify all my findings before you apply them to your board.
