Closing the serial monitor crashes the computer... (Mac)

I'm having a bit of a weird problem, not sure if caused by the board or the Mac-driver etc. When having a lot of serial output from the Chipkit to the serial monitor in MPIDE, and the monitor is closed - the whole computer freezes and must be rebooted manually.

I've mostly seen this using 115200 speeds, but may also happen with lower speeds.

What could be causing this? Is this a known issue? Is my Mac borked? ;)

(I don't think I've seen this issue with an Arduino board, but I'm not too sure about that either)
