I can't find the DIP version of the chip that you mentioned: can anybody post a link to it?
It would be great, because i bougth this as a prototyping platform (you call it like this: http://digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?NavPath=2,892,893&Prod=CHIPKIT-UNO32). How can you call it "prototyping" when you need the same board to install the project?
There are many bare arduino version, look at this:

Can I do something similar with the Uno32?

Do you mean something like this:
http://fubarlabs.org/fubar-labs-pre-release-fubarino-sd-at-sxsw

You can plug that into a breadboard and then connect up everything else to it. That board is not exactly an UNO32, but it's pretty close, and it will run under MPIDE just fine.

Thanks Brian, this looks already better for production, even if I would like to see a more bare version, without usb and no sd card. Also there is no info on prices etc.

No news about the "DIP" version of the chip from chipkit? does it exist (or will it ever exist)?

What chip is that? Do you mean a DIL version of the PIC32 used on the chipKITs?

The DIP PIC32 has been available for some time and discussed in this thread http://www.chipkit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=505. Note the reduced RAM and Flash though...
